Garbage and Other Garbage

Bay Records 202

Dr. Jekyll's Cola
Definitely a remnant of the 60s, but not quite what you think. Really meant as a takeoff on the idea so many people had then that the right pill would solve all their problems. Judging by the prescription drug ads on TV that idea is still with us.

Laugh, Sally, Laugh
Sally laughed every day from the 1930s until San Francisco's Playland-at-the-Beach amusement park was torn down by a "developer" and replaced with high-rise apartments. They said they were going to put Sally in a glass case in the lobby, and that's the image to keep in mind.

Janet Smith wrote this for her son, and sings harmony with me.

Garbage!
I wrote this when I read that San Francisco Bay was about half the size it had been when Sir Francis Drake first sailed into it. I wasn't expecting it to become an environmental anthem. Most topical songs quickly become outdated; it's unfortunate that this one hasn't.

Power, Power Everywhere
A song from my early Bob Dylan period, which lasted about a week. Most everything here is symbolic of something in the real world, but I'll leave it to you to find your own meanings.

Co-written with Marc Hatfield.

Charlie Chan
A long, long time ago I read a magazine article mentioning that makeup people used tape on Roland Winters' eyes to make him look Chinese; it also said that Sidney Toler claimed to do it just by scrunching up his eyes.

Waiting
Not the sort of song people usually expect from me.

A Thousand Songs
I started writing this right after a folk festival in California, and finished it driving across country to be at one in New York. The title might be hyperbole, but at some festivals, particularly when the parties last till dawn, we might come close.
